  2. Tips for tanning at home

Comments Off on Tips for tanning at home

We’ve been lucky with the weather during lockdown but between sunny spells why not maintain your glow with some self tanning sessions?

    What you will need:

    • Your favourite tan – I love St Tropez mousse or Sienna X Express mousse – both of these have a shorter development time than some tanning products. They are both still super pigmented but need less time to develop, meaning you can shower off before bed to stop it rubbing on to your sheets and you won’t spend the whole day waiting for your tan to develop.
    • Tanning mitt – available cheaply from Boots, Superdrug, most chemists, Amazon, etc. If can’t get hold of one rubber gloves will work too.
    • Loose, dark and comfortable clothing to wear whilst your tan develops. Any strappy knickers and bra straps may rub against your tan and it may come off slightly. T shirts & joggers or loose PJs are best.

    Procedure:

    1. The day before applying your tan, take your time to shave and exfoliate your body. Apply your exfoliating scrub and rub into your body either using a hard pressure in a circular movement with your hands or a body brush. Exfoliating will remove your dead skin cells and will create a smoother, more even base for your tan to grab onto. By not exfoliating before your tan, the solution will grab onto skin cells that will fall off in the next few days and so your tan will fade quicker and unevenly. Shaving before your tan is key! Shaving once your tan has developed will simply remove some of the colour and therefore won’t last as long.
    2. If you have applied any deodorant, use a wet wipe or wash your underarms to remove it. Deodorant doesn’t play a huge part in obstructing tan development but can cause some alarm! When tan is applied over deodorant, the ingredients mix and usually tend to turn deodorant green but this will wash off normally so do not panic!
    3. Using any kind of moisturiser apply a thin layer to the dryer areas of your body to stop tan grabbing onto these skin cells and turning slightly darker. Elbows, knees, ankles, along the sides of your feet, the palms of your hands, fingers and knuckles and your eyebrows if they are fair (to stop them going darker).
    4. Apply your tan all over using your mitt and buff it into the body in circular motions. When you get to areas such as the inside of your wrist, fingers and feet, use a very small amount of tan here. These areas need to look natural and so by using just a small amount and dusting it lightly over your knuckles, fingers and toes this will make it look perfect. If you would like these areas to look darker once it has developed, you can always do one more layer and let it develop again.
    5. Air dry your body for a few minutes until you feel dry and then wear loose, comfy, dark clothing.
    6. Wait for your tan to develop for the recommended development time & avoid all contact with water. When going to the bathroom, use a baby wipe to wipe the palms of your hands, rather than washing them in water.
    7. When showering off your tan, use only warm water, no bubbles or soap. This allows the tan to sink fully into your skin before being washed properly. From your second shower onwards you can shower as normal but always pat yourself dry, don’t rub.
    8. Treat your tan like a normal holiday tan. The more you look after it by moisturising, the longer it will last!

So what are you waiting for? Get glowing!

We offer Sienna X spray tans in the salon too, check out the options and decide which one you’d like to book when the salon reopens!

Hope to see you all again soon, stay safe, Madison xxx

  3. Sunbed reopening and tanning guidance

Comments Off on Sunbed reopening and tanning guidance

From Monday 15th June the sunbed is open again! We will be advertising the days it will be open and it will be on a strictly appointment basis only.

Tips for ensuring a beautiful, even tan.

    Before the tan:

    • Thoroughly exfoliate all areas of your body to remove the dead layer of skin 24 hours before. With a good exfoliation, you will ensure that your tan lasts as long as possible.
    • 24 hours before the day of your tan do not to apply any lotion, oils or perfumes, as they will reduce your skin’s ability to absorb the tanning solution.
    • Make sure that all make-up is removed before your tanning session.
    • We recommend that you shave the day before you tan as well.
    • You will need to remove any jewellery before you tan.

    After the tan:

    • Drink water directly after spending time in a tanning bed. Tanning can dehydrate the skin.
    • Apply a good-quality moisturiser to your skin directly after tanning to help cool the skin and replenish moisture. All professional tanning products can be purchased at our reception.

Determining your skin type and duration of tanning sessions:

Our skin type is something we are born with and we cannot change it! There are six basic categories of skin types. See if you can identify your skin type using the table below. Our therapists can help with this too.

    Skin types:

    • Skin Type I: Usually bright white or pale skin, blue or green eyes, red hair and many freckles. This skin type always burns outdoors, never tans.

NOTE: A person who is a true Skin Type I should avoid tanning indoors and outdoors.

    • Skin Type II: Light beige skin, blue or green eyes; blonde or light brown hair and maybe freckles. This skin type has a strong tendency to sunburn outdoors, but sometimes tans.
    • Skin Type III: Light brown skin, brown eyes and hair. This skin type sometimes burns outdoors but always tans.
    • Skin Type IV: Light brown or olive skin, dark brown eyes and hair. This skin type sometimes burns outdoors and tans readily.
    • Skin Type V: Brown skin, dark brown hair and eyes. This skin type rarely burns outdoors and tans easily.
    • Skin Type VI: Black skin, black-brown eyes and hair. This skin type rarely sunburns outdoors.

Please note: although the chart above discusses skin type burning potential, you should always tan in moderation and avoid sun burning indoors (and out)!

Indoor tanning chart by skin type:

Skin Type I: THIS SKIN TYPE SHOULD NOT TAN

Skin type II: 4 min. 5 min. 7 min. 9 min. 9 min. 11 min.

Skin type III: 5-6 min. 6-7 min. 7-8 min. 10 min. 10 min. 12 min.

Skin type IV: 7 min. 8 min. 9-10 min. 10 min. 12 min. 15 min.

    Skin type V: 9 min. 10 min. 12 min. 12 min. 13 min. 15 min.

    Skin type VI: 10 min. 12min. 13 min. 13 min. 15 min. 15 min.

Please note: All skin types should skip a day in between tanning and leave 48 hours between first and second sessions. If there are reddish skin tones or tenderness customers are advised to wait until that goes away before tanning again.

From June 15th sunbed appointments are strictly by appointment only – contact 07882 167532 for availability.

Must be over 18 years of age: ID will be requested if required.

  4. Treat yourself to a home pedicure

Comments Off on Treat yourself to a home pedicure

We have been lucky enough to have lots of sunshine during lockdown, definite flip-flop weather. But are your feet feeling like they need some TLC? Unfortunately Madison Beauty is closed but I have created a step by step home pedicure guide that’s easy to follow, even for first timers. Or you could have some fun and get the children or your partner involved while you relax with a glass of champagne! 🥂

    What you’ll need:

    • A towel for the floor and one to cover the chair that you will lift your foot onto
    • A chair or rest to lift your foot onto
    • A washing up bowl (pedicure foot spa if you have one) to fill with warm water
    • Bubble bath or foot soak
    • Foot scrub or body scrub
    • Hard skin removal tool (foot file or pumice stone)
    • Nail file
    • Nail buffer
    • Nail clippers
    • Cotton pads.
    • Cuticle pusher or orange stick
    • Nail polish remover or acetone
    • Nail polish base coat
    • Nail polish colour
    • Nail polish top coat
    • Toe separators or kitchen roll

    Procedure:

    1. Place the towel on the floor and another on the chair or surface you will be lifting your foot onto to work on.
    2. Fill the large plastic bowl/foot spa with warm water and bubbles or foot soak and put both of your feet into the water and rest for five minutes.
    3. Take one foot out of the water and dry using the towel on the chair or surface in front of you. Using your nail polish remover or acetone, pour onto cotton pads. Wipe the cotton pads over your nail to remove any polish.
    4. Using your cuticle pushing tool or orange stick, gently push back your cuticles as far as possible. The warm water softens cuticles so this should be a little easier. For any cuticle that you can’t push or remove, you can buff them out later.
    5. Cut your nails or file them down to your desired length and shape. Short, square nails are the strongest option as they do not have a point of impact if you stub your toe. Rounder shaped nails have a point at the end of the nail and when they come into contact with something, the point is easy to split or break.
    6. Buff over the nail to make it smooth. Be sure to go right down to the nail bed to remove any stubborn cuticle that you couldn’t push back in step 4.
    7. Take your other foot out the water bowl and repeat the above steps
    8. Hard skin removal time! Apply pressure backwards and forwards up and down the sole of your foot to remove any hard skin. Be sure to go right around the back of your heel and the to the ball of your foot as these are the places hard skin gather the most.
    9. Apply a small amount of exfoliator to all of the foot.
    10. Repeat on the other foot and then put both feet into the bowl and swish the water around to rinse off. Empty the bowl and put aside.
    11. Apply a small amount of moisturiser into the palms of your hands and warm up by rubbing together. You should then apply this moisturiser to your feet and spread over your ankles, and up your legs slightly. Repeat this step on your other foot.
    12. Wipe away any cream that may be left on your toe nails to ensure that your base coat and polish can be painted on easily.
    13. If you do not have any toe separators, fold a piece of kitchen roll in half and twist. You can then weave this paper in and out of your toes!
    14. Apply one coat of your base coat to each nail.
    15. Apply two layers of your desired polish to each nail. Work across one foot and then onto the other. Avoid painting two coats of polish at once onto each nail before moving onto the other.
    16. Wait around 5 minutes before applying one layer of your top coat polish.
    17. Once you have applied your top coat, sit back and relax for the next 30 minutes.

Top Tip: Nail polish can take any time up to 2 hours to dry properly, so please be very careful whilst your nails are drying and relax!

  5. Salon hygiene

    Comments Off on Salon hygiene

Keeping clients safe and the salon clean has always been and always will be a top priority for us but we do understand your concerns regarding returning to the salon once the Government have said it is safe to do so. We have been taking steps during lockdown to ensure that everybody is kept as safe as possible.

I have refreshed my Barbicide course on how to keep salon and tools cleaned and disinfected at all times. The safety of our staff and our clients is of paramount importance, so we have and will be repeating the following steps, before the re-opening of the salon:

    • Cleaned and/or disinfected all surfaces and implements

    • Laundered and/or disinfected towels and blankets etc

    • Removed any non-essential items throughout our business

    • Initiated contactless methods of scheduling and payment

    • Acquired appropriate personal protective equipment to be used when necessary or requested

•Discontinued the practice of hand shaking and other non-essential contact

    • Re-trained our staff on essential infection control and hand hygiene practices.

We look forward to welcoming you all back to the salon once it is safe to do so.

Why not take a look at our Treatments page and decide what you’d like to book when the salon reopens.

Comments Off on Home eyelash extension removal

A step by step guide to safely removing your eyelash extensions at home.

    What you will need:

    • Lash remover or oil if you haven’t got any remover
    • Cotton buds
    • Wet cotton wool

    Procedure:

    1. Close one eye and with a cotton bud apply the remover/oil to the top of the eyelid at the base of the extensions
    2. Leave on for 5 minutes (oil 10 minutes)
    3. With a cotton bud gently wipe the lash extensions and they will slowly start to fall off. If there are any stubborn ones apply more lash remover and repeat until all off
    4. Repeat on the other eye
    5. Once all lashes are removed quickly wipe over with your wet cotton wool
    6. Rinse eyes and lashes with warm water

Now is the best time to have a break from lash extensions – we advise you to use the lash serum AM & PM until your next appointment.
